I have a couple of Italian switchblade knives, one stag handle and one black wood, both 8". I've been lookin for a stag handled switchblade knife with a 5mm thick blade spine but the prices are way too high. BTW, the knives in the original West Side Story movie were lever lock switchblades, not push button.

It's made for busting skulls. That's what the awl is for. Just like you can hold the tool in your fist for a solid punch amplifier. It wasn't made for snowflakes.

What if the reamer was the priority, and then they tought "hm, might aswell put an awl in this pointy thing" and tadaaa. Like wire striper : not necessary but if you have the space for it, why not. On the other hand, what about bottle openers ? Do we really need this one (on a leatherman i use the pliers for exemple) Also, having the swiss champ with 5 back tools, i think the awl is the most usefull than the 4 others (chisel, corkscrew, small flathead, hook) so, for the space i understand why its the awl by "default" and thus giving us the impression of omnipresence. On pliers based multitool on the other hand, consedering it takes the space of a "real" tool its another story, but then again, what about bottle openers...

I have a Victorinox ranger grip, it has the awl . I used it the other day whilst in the bush to sow up split stitching on my leather gloves. Keep it. I also use this knife daily at work and at home often, it's always with me.

I have a buck 110 folding knife that was my dad's when I was a little kid it has a broken tip on it I've been debating whether to send it in and have it fixed or not. I've heard the steel they use on the new blades isn't quite as good as the old steel but I've also heard the opposite I guess they could just reshape the tip and put a new edge on it.

These things that is shown in the window to this video (the tools) might be usefull for some people, and for other, not! BUT you never have to carry them as EDC. You need them in your garage, or maybe in your pack when you are travelling away for a holiday on your motorcycle for instance. Not in your pocket!

I'm totally with you on the do whatever works for you philosophy, but I have to say... multitools are always compromises, and usually bad compromises. You're probably better off spending the money on real dedicated tools and keeping them in a small toolbox in your vehicle, unless you don't EDC a vehicle I suppose.

I still have a stiletto switchblades bought in Tijuana Mexico around 1961. The handle is black. The blade is stainless steel, no rust on any part. The blade is marked: RIZZUTO ESTILETO MILANO. I was around 17 yrs old and these things were illegal in California. I don't know why I have keep it for so long maybe the "cool factor"

Practical? I dunno. I can't think of very many things a stiletto can do that is practically useful. I also can't think of a single Chinese knife (and I'm a sorta Spyderco guy) available in the US that is a genuinely quality product. Even if there was one, I wouldn't pay a nickel for anything Chinese, ever, if there's a non-Chinese equivalent available. I think my phone is the only Chinese thing I own.
